I was too quiet a RWBY fan, and now it tears me to know that I won’t be able to say to Monty Oum in person that his work had inspired me so much. Thank you, Monty, for bringing to life the RWBY-universe.
In all honesty, I loved RWBY for very different reasons than most others, I think. I confess: I’ve only ever watched Episode 1 of Season 1 all the way through, and I really can’t tell you any of the major plot points in the whole show - unless, of course, those plot points happened in fight sequences, which I watched instead of the plot and absolutely adored for its creative choreography. (In hindsight, I guess I’m actually a bad fan? Or a very selective one, haha-)
But what I did love…. was Crescent Rose, Ruby’s scythe. Ever since I saw Ruby’s trailer, I had fallen in love. With her character design, the fighting sequence, the film direction, and most of all - her giant transforming scythe.
And the rest was history - two transforming versions of the Crescent Rose scythe that made it to two cons, pages and pages and hours and hours (and dollars and dollars) of design time dedicated to making that single prop. And I regret none of it.
But what I do regret…. is not being able to tell you, Monty, how much of an inspiration you were to me the past two years. Because you were, and you will continue to be for me.
Thank you, Monty Oum, for your inspiration. RIP.
